New Exhibit: “Summer Salon” Opens Tuesday, April 10th 5-7pm

Although we are on the down-hill-side of Season, the Islands are still hopping.  There are still several wonderful social events planned (the Opening being one), but daily activities are shifting – getting boxes to Pak n Ship, readying for the “last round of guests,” squeezing in good-bye dinners and the big one – closing up the house.  This time of year reminds me of the song, “See You in September… when the summer’s through” that was popular back-in-the-day.  Only here on the Islands it’s November.  Wishing you a wonderful, fabulous summer at your other home.  But! before you go …

At the Gallery:
The response to the current exhibit, “New York, New York,” which brings a slice of the New York art scene to Sanibel, has been fabulous from Islanders and visitors alike.  This exhibit with its diverse and outstanding selection of paintings, ceramics and sculpture comes down on April 6th to get ready for the final show of the season.  Please stop by to see the art-making of these nine highly talented artists.

The Opening Reception for the final exhibit of the Season, “Summer Salon” is Tuesday, April 10th from 5-7pm.  This exhibit is a group show of the artists featured at the gallery this season.  “Summer Salon” provides you with an opportunity to see some of the work you might have missed – and there were some terrific shows – as well as new pieces from several of the artists, including Greg Biolchini’s, Summer Skies, Hollis Jeffcoat’s Aqua Journey and Cassie Ryall’s Souls.

In addition to the art it is a chance to see friends and neighbors before everyone heads for points North.

I hope that you will join us Tuesday, April 10th from 5-7pm for the Opening of this exhibit and a farewell toast.  Make no mistake the gallery will be open all summer with some special surprises.

I look forward to seeing you at the gallery.
Peace and Art, Maureen

9 New York Artists at Gallery in
New Exhibit: “New York, New York”

Opening Tuesday, March 13th 5-7pm

On the Islands:
Left turns are impossible, Periwinkle’s a parking lot, your house is a hotel, reservations at your favorite restaurant…in 2 weeks, Ahhh the signs of Season.  But of course, the weather is gorgeous, the Islands are beautiful, people are happy, and the Island-wide “Shellabration” to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Shell Fair is in full swing.  Everything-shell is going on in addition to the fair itself – ‘fashionistas’ on the cat-walk in shell ensembles at the Sanctuary, shell inspired cocktails on restaurant menus, tallying the Guinness Book of Records results for the ‘Sanibel Stoop,’ and of course art.

At the Gallery:
This week from February 27th – March 3rd the “Shellabration Invitational Exhibit” featuring 14 Sanibel artists whose work was inspired by our Island treasures is on display.  The Gallery will donate 10% of all sales from this exhibit to benefit – what else! - The Shell Museum.  Then Hollis Jeffcoat’s highly acclaimed solo exhibit, “Aqua Journey” returns for the following week and will close on March 10th.  Please come by to see these wonderful exhibits.

New Exhibit:
Opens Tuesday, March 13th with a reception from 5-7 PM.

The new show, “New York, New York” is an exciting exhibit of work from 9 New York artists.  It was inspired by master painter/teacher Nicolas Carone and is dedicated to his memory.

As we sat in the gallery after the wonderful opening for Nick’s solo exhibit in 2010, he suggested/commanded that I bring a group of New York artists to Sanibel.  It was his only visit to Sanibel, but he loved it and the people he met at the opening.  “Get 2-3 pieces from really good New York artists,” Nick said.  “These people will appreciate good pictures,” as he always called paintings.  Two years later, I have.  Thanks, Nick.

I called upon David Fratkin, painter and New York art-scene citizen to co-curate this exhibition.  David presented me with many talented artists whose work he admired.  Together we selected the New York 9 for this exhibit – six painters, a ceramist, a sculptor and a printmaker.  Like New York the work is diverse, interesting and intense.  The creators are mid-career artists who have dedicated their lives to making art that adds beauty, interest and wonder to our world…

Poogy Bjerklie’s still-life paintings play intense flowers against subtle backgrounds.
Claude Carone’s abstract paintings move us into other worlds.
Devin Dougherty’s ceramic pots are thought provoking pieces of other times.
David Fratkin creates mesmerizing patterns of texture and color with paint.
Michael Goodwin paints intimate, atmospheric landscapes of Maine.
The Everglades are the subject of Owen Gray’s teaming with life paintings.
Paula Heisen paints surrealistic still-lifes of creatures in fabric landscapes.
Massive public work sculptor, Deborah Masters creates smaller-than-life ceramic heads.
Susan Mastrangelo catches women in motion with her mixed-media prints.

“New York, New York” is a sophisticated and eclectic exhibit that presents Sanibel with a slice of the current New York art scene – talented artists working at what they love.

Please join us Tuesday, March 13th from 5-7pm for the Opening of this exhibit.  Most/all of the artists will be at the Opening and will participate in The Artists’ Talk on Wednesday, February 14th at 11AM.  This talk is expected to be full capacity, please come early.

I look forward to seeing you at the gallery.

Peace and Art, Maureen

New Exhibit: “Artful Homes:  New Ideas for Seaside Living”
Opens Tuesday, January 10th 5-7pm

2012 – Bring it On!  I’ve heard from many that 2011 has been a difficult year, and I for one am VERY glad to be welcoming in the New Year.  It feels that there has already been a shift and people seem to be more positive and upbeat.  I hope that’s true and true for you.

Here on the Islands the weather has been unseasonable warm, turtle hatchings have been good, Blind Pass looks like it is going to have on-going maintenance, the legacy of Carol’s Island Nutrition will continue as The Sanibel Sprout, new restaurants are opening … the list goes on.  2012 – a good year, a very good year and I wish you “All the Very Best.”

At the Gallery:
The current exhibit “Sacred Season; Sacred Art,” which has received high praise from viewers, will be up until January 8th and I invite you to come see this terrific show.  Of note for fans of Sheena Cameron’s Messenger Horses:  Sheena has created a new series of her amazing horses inspired by Goddesses of Ancient Cultures for this exhibit.  Her knowledge, skill and insight have given us special Horses with special messages.

New Exhibit:
Opening Reception for the new exhibit, “Artful Homes:  New Ideas for Seaside Living” is Tuesday, January 10th from 5-7pm. Please join us for the opening of our first ever Watson MacRae Gallery of home interiors displaying handmade colorful and creative accents for your seaside lifestyle.  Furniture, lamps, tableware, pottery and glass from seven new artists along with paintings and sculpture from current artists will transform the space into a showcase of home décor.  When artists make functional objects with skill, care and love, the pieces are transformed from everyday to art.  Such is the work in this exhibit – both hand-formed and heart-felt pieces that not only add to the beauty of a home, but also to the warmth and personality of the surroundings.

“Artful Homes,” which has three themes – Island Style, Asian and Contemporary is intended to present unusual combinations, new ideas and new artists.

Two Sanibel artists are featured in this exhibit.  Katie Gardenia has applied her ‘Katie-flare’ to creating chairs, lamps and stools that are wonderful accents to any style of home, and Lacy McClary as created whimsical Adirondack chairs with sports themes for the outdoors.  Ed Koehler from Naples sculpts lamps and tables from steel and resin influenced by Florida flora that are centerpieces in themselves.

Tables will be set with the work of exceptional artists in ceramics and glass.  Two young potters from Key West, Kelly Lever and Adam Russell bring luscious new colors to their Island Pottery.  While the exquisite bowls of Ani Kasten from Maryland have an ancient and Zen quality in their design and feel.  Also with an Asian feel are the strong ceramic jars and plates of Courtney Martin from North Carolina.  Andy Shaw of Louisiana has thoughtfully and expertly made tableware of porcelain that is both beautiful and sturdy.  The clean lines and clear colors of contemporary pieces from Liz Zlot Summerfield of North Carolina adds spark, while the delicate textured bird tablescapes of Virginian Lucy Dierks brings art to the table.  And of course we must have shells.  Claire Prenton from Cincinnati via England brings a Victorian aesthetic to her delicate rendering of sea inspired porcelain pitchers and tumblers.

Each of these artists is expressing through the materials they choose and the process they use, the love they have for the objects they create and a desire to transmit that love and connect through their art.  I invite you to come and experience this unique exhibit and I hope it will ignite your senses and desire for selecting handmade for your home — teapots, bowls, chairs, plates and vessels – strikingly practical yet individually and imaginatively formed for use and collection  …  Follow your heart to handmade.

·      Please join us Tuesday, December 13th from 5-7pm for the Opening of this exhibit.

·      There will not be an Artist Talk for this exhibit.

·      But as we are doing this Season, we will be exchanging “a can of beans for a glass of wine” in support of the wonderful F.I.S.H. (Friends in Service Here), which provides a food pantry, transportation, among other services for folks in need on the Islands.  Once again, please bring your food donations to the Opening – it is very needed and appreciated.

I hope you will attend and I look forward to seeing you at the gallery.

Peace and Art, Maureen

Thu, 27 Oct 2011 10:34:19 -0700 Announcement: New Exhibition Opening Reception http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/announcement-new-exhibition-opening-reception http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/announcement-new-exhibition-opening-reception

First Opening of the Season: “Environs” Tuesday, November 15th 5-7pm

I love this time of year on Sanibel.  The weather has turned cool and dry, the Islands are cleaned and clipped and the first Snowbirds (and I mean that in the most respectful way) are re-appearing like colorful crocuses popping up around the Islands – early harbingers of Season.

Most establishments are ready with a few, hustling to be open.  It seems that now both Twilight Café and The Crab Shack have reopened.  (Is this my first retraction?)  Things must have worked out in some way.  Well, welcome back to you all.

At the Gallery:

The Gallery is ready with a varied and exciting group of artists to show - more pottery, new jewelry, sparkling glass, home accents and evocative exhibits.

The first exhibit, “Environs” features three local artists who express their love and concern for our beautiful environment.  Having moved as a child from Chicago to Bonita Springs, Greg Biolchini, who is nationally known for his pastels and portraits has turned his considerable talents to painting the power and majesty of his life-long love – Florida Skies.  Mally Khorasantchi fell so in love with Florida that she moved from her native Germany to Naples.  Struck by the color and exuberance of the landscape, Khorasantchi creates big, bold, graphic works to capture her view of nature.  While Lindsey Wollard, a fourth generation Floridian, builds small, quiet tree sculptures from used population and land development books making statements about environmental destruction.
Each of these artists in their unique way is expressing their deep love and concern for our environment.  As we experience this wonderful exhibit, we can both see and feel the beauty and power of their view-point.

Please join us on Tuesday, November 15th from 5-7pm for the Opening of this exhibit.  You can meet the artists, as well as see your neighbors and friends who are back – a little kick-off to another fabulous season On Island.

I look forward to seeing you at the gallery.
Peace and Art, Maureen

Fri, 23 Sep 2011 11:44:00 -0700 News from Sanibel & the Gallery http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/news-from-sanibel-the-gallery http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/news-from-sanibel-the-gallery
While the temperature is still in the 80’s – “Autumn is in the Light,” as painter, Hollis Jeffcoat, quipped.  We can see the change in season and this signals a change in pace, activity, conversation, as the Islands ready for every ones’ return.

There have been a few projects that have been underway, while you were Off Island.  As you may remember, Summer is Black Top Season and the City has been at it again.  Not only have they improved the bike path in many places, but also brand new sections have been added in different parts of Sanibel.  I’ll leave the discovery of ‘where’ for when you return.

Comings and Goings:

After a buyer for the business backed out at the last minute, Arundel’s Stationary closed last week after decades of service, which will prove a loss to the Islands both in terms of character(s) and convenience.

There is a For Lease sign in front of both the Twilight Café and the Stone Crab Shack … sounds like there is a story behind these departures.

However, another sign – Painters working on the ‘La Dolce Ellington’s’ building may indicate a new restaurant coming into that location.

The Green Flash was getting a facelift when I was there last week – new walkway pavers, tables, chairs, rug … same great view.  I heard that they bought a majority share in the Mucky Duck.  I wonder if that means that menu will sport scalloped potatoes and creamed spinach 364 days a year.

The 2011 Best of the Islands votes are in and …

Watson MacRae Gallery was voted BEST Art Gallery!!!  I am very excited and grateful.  The wonderful artists who created such fabulous art are at the heart of this honor.  And two of them, Leila Walker and Hollis Jeffcoat deserve special acknowledgment not only for their art, but also for their contribution to the gallery.  Leila for helping keep the gallery and me running, and Hollis for her very special talent of hanging exhibits that are beautiful, interesting and visually engaging.

A heart-felt thank you to the visitors, friends and patrons of the Gallery, I greatly appreciate your support at all levels and have loved everyday of the past 3 years.

Oye! And now the pressure is really on for Next Season!  But I’m ready.  I’ll have the schedule with openings, artists’ talks and new special events in the October letter.  It’s going to be great!  We re-open on October 3rd with a wonderful exhibit of selected work from the gallery artists.  Please come by, I’d love to see you.  Best, Maureen

New at the Gallery & On the Island

First,

I would like to thank everyone for supporting the gallery this season.
It’s been a good one and lots of fun.
Thanks for visiting, admiring and acquiring.
It’s all appreciated.

1. June SALE: A once a year sale - many of our favorite artists’ work in ceramics, glass and jewelry is
30-60% Off!  Do Come By.

2. New Exhibit “Summer Salon”:  Our wonderful summer exhibit featuring several pieces from the artists we showed this season.  The gallery is like a little museum with artwork for everyone to enjoy.

3. Japanese Potters Fund: In April donations to help the Japanese Potters rebuild their kilns after the earthquake raised $300 (thanks to all and the nice contribution by Wilson Jewelers).  I matched the funds and sent $600 to Mud Flats Studio School in Boston who is collecting the monies (contributions are still being accepted).  It’s an amazing effort by artists and art lovers worldwide.

A Note about the Islands:

Signs of Summer on Sanibel:  The temperature heats up, the natives (that’s us) slow down, restaurants are happy for walk-ins, visitors are from the North – of Florida and the “Other Coast’, the police are off the streets, Snowbirds fly down to check the progress or lack of, on the home renovations they planned, and the big one – left hand turns are possible – even easy!  Nature’s indicator however, the daily cooling summer storms have not arrived and that’s problematic.  We are down 9 inches in Lee County and more on Sanibel/Captiva.  The storm clouds hang over Ft. Myers.  They don’t seem to like to cross the Causeway either and the rains stop short of us.

Summer is also the time when changes on the Island often happen.  A few things that are in the works:  the tavern formerly known as Mc T’s is getting an “extreme makeover”; while the “Ellington’s” sign is down, they claim they’re not out; plans are underway for an Island wide “shellabration” marking the 75th Anniversary of the Shell Fair in late February; and casting calls are going out for the next “Dancing with the Stars” fundraiser …

And I’m planning for next season as well.   January’s exhibit called “Artful Home” will be very different and will feature artist-made furniture, tableware, lamps, garden sculptures, artwork and other surprises. And that’s just the beginning.

Wishing you a Wonderful Summer and looking forward to seeing you at the Gallery or on-line which I’m also working on … more to come. Best, Maureen

Mon, 21 Mar 2011 12:30:55 -0700 Invitation to New Exhibit http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/invitation-to-new-exhibit http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/invitation-to-new-exhibit

AT THE GALLERY …

 1. Special Note - Meet the Artist: Messenger Horse Artist, Sheena Cameron Wednesday, March 23rd from 2 to 3pm.

 2. “People and Places” New Exhibit Opening Reception  Tuesday, April 5th from 5:30 to 7:30

3. Artists’ Talk Wednesday, April 6th 11:00 to 12:30

The current exhibit, “On Paper: Print, Paint, Draw” is on view at the gallery until Saturday, April 2.  This exhibit features three masters of their mediums, Hollis Jeffcoat, Pattie Lipman and Dan Welden and their unique way of creating works on paper.  The exhibit has had a great response, please come by and enjoy the wonderful variety of images and styles or watch the video on our website watsonmacraegallery.com

A Note about the Islands:
Given the tragedy in Japan I find it hard to write anything about our beloved Islands that doesn’t seem trite.  All is well and wonderful here.  Happy Spring.

The new exhibit, which interestingly has five pieces about Mt. Fuji by Jim Krieger, is dedicated to the people and creatures of Japan.  At the Opening and throughout April we will have a collection jar for donations to the American Red Cross’ efforts.  The Gallery will match the amount donated.

Now About the Gallery:
Sheena Cameron, creator of the wonderful Messenger Horses the will be at the Gallery on Wednesday March 23rd from 2-3pm.  Sheena is making a special stop in Sanibel on her way from New Mexico to Cuba and bringing a new herd of her fabulous horses and ponies with her.  If you have your own Messenger Horse or just admire them, I invite you to visit the Gallery.  There is no formal talk, but Sheena will tell stories about her new creations and answer questions, so just come by anytime between 2-3pm and please feel free to bring a friend … and a horse story of your own.

New Exhibit: In April’s exhibit, “People and Places” (see card below) the gallery is pleased to introduce a very talented painter from South Carolina, Harriet Marshall Goode and welcome back sculptors, Leila Walker and Jim Krieger.  In addition we honor the one-year anniversary of the wondrous Nicolas Carone’s visit to Sanibel by including a selection of his work.

In “People and Places” the figure and landscape are featured … in interesting combinations.  Harriet Marshall Goode’s ethereal paintings place women in a symbolic and metaphysical landscape, while Leila Walker’s new wire sculptures are filled with odd bits providing each with a symbolic inner landscape.  Jim Krieger has created a tribute to Japanese artist, Hokusai in his beautiful work on copper and lead of Mt. Fuji some of which include figures.  The late Nicolas Carone always loved painting the figure and even in his spacious landscapes in this exhibit they appear.

The remarkable work in this exhibit is like a travelogue through which we can visit the inner and outer worlds of these four amazing artists.

The Opening Reception is Tuesday, April 5th from 5:30 to 7:30pm and the Artists’ Talk on Wednesday, April 6th from 11:00 to 12:30.  Please join us for the Opening of this very exciting exhibit and informative artist talk.  Look forward to seeing you at the Gallery.
Best, Maureen

February’s beautiful show, “Florida Abstracted:  Darby Bannard and Hollis Jeffcoat” ends on March 5th.  Both of these accomplished artists had articles in the papers this month –

I hope you enjoy reading about them and stop by to see their extraordinary work.

A Note about the Islands:
Season is in full swing and that means social events, Company, fund-raisers, beach and … traffic.  I don’t want to say it’s been bad, but the other day I was driving to Dixie Beach Road from the Gallery and as I sat in stopped traffic at the Community Center, an elderly couple strolled past me on the bike path.  I didn’t time how long it took me to get to the turn off, but – as I pulled into the turning lane – that’s right – there they were!  So, I could have walked there faster!  But the weather has been glorious, we’re on Sanibel - so who cares.

Now About the Gallery:
“On Paper: Print, Paint, Draw” brings three masters of their mediums together for this exhibit.  Hollis Jeffcoat, Pattie Lipman and Dan Welden, who all studied and worked in New York present their unique way of creating works on paper.  Hollis Jeffcoat continues to capture the glory of Florida with pastel and oils.  Pattie Lipman uses the time-honored methods of printmaking – intaglio, mezzotint to produce delicate, intimate prints.  While Master Printmaker, Dan Welden, inventor of the solar plate process, creates fascinating, mutli-media abstracted prints.

“On Paper: Print, Paint, Draw” presents us with a wonderful variety of images – subtle, strong, colorful, monotone, realistic, abstract, quiet, bold – a harmony of contrasts.  The Opening Reception is Tuesday, March 8th  from 5:30 to 7:30pm.  Welden and Lipman will talk about their work and different printmaking processes at the Artists’ Talk on Wednesday, March 9th  from 11:00 to 12:30.

This season the Gallery has been supporting an Island cause each month.  March will be devoted to supporting the efforts of Zonta and the Onyx & Breezy Foundation.  Please join us for the Opening of this very exciting exhibit and informative artist talk.  Look forward to seeing you at the Gallery.
Best, Maureen

A Note about the Islands:
Blind Pass is back in the news … and it’s not good, but people are rallying to address the issues.  To find out more - Jane Brickley does a good job of covering the story in the Captiva Current or go to www.MyCEPD.com.

Now About the Gallery:
For February’s exhibit, “Florida Abstracted” I am pleased to present the work of W. Darby Bannard and Hollis Jeffcoat – two exciting and acclaimed artists, who both left the high-life of New York for the high-color of Florida.  This exhibit presents the oil stick paintings created by Bannard in response to his new home-state’s lush, colorful landscape and Jeffcoat’s recent work on Sanibel, evoking childhood memories of swimming in the Gulf.  With different styles and approaches to abstract painting, they display in this work their mutual dedication and commitment to making art that is both masterful and soulful.

Bannard, who is Professor of Art at Miami University has exhibited since 1965 in most of the major museums in the US and published over 300 articles and art reviews.  Jeffcoat too has exhibited extensively in the US, Canada and France with many museum exhibits to her credit.

“Florida Abstracted” is for those who love abstract art and for those who want to understand it better.  The Opening Reception is Tuesday, February 1st from 5:30 to 7:30pm.  Hollis Jeffcoat and Darby Bannard will attend the opening and will speak about their work and their experiences in the art world at the Artists’ Talk on Wednesday, February 2nd from 11:00 to 12:30.  Please join us for the Opening of this very exciting exhibit and informative artist talk.

Mon, 20 Dec 2010 14:01:03 -0800 New January Exhibit Opening Invitation http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/new-january-exhibit-opening-invitation http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/new-january-exhibit-opening-invitation

New Exhibit Reception and Artist Talk

  “Sacred Creatures” Exhibit Opening Reception

Thursday, January 6 from 5:30 to 7:30

Artist Talk Friday, the 7 from 11:00 to 12:00

It was as festive at the Gallery for the Opening of Folk, Fantasy & Outsider Art, as it is around the Islands.  (The Community Church and its environs are dripping in lights!)  The work is whimsical, quirky, fun and very well done.  If you can’t make it to the gallery by January 3rd when the show closes, you can see all the wonderful work on my website as well as three of the artists on the video.  www.WatsonMacRaeGallery.com  But before you click …

A Note about the Islands:
We were holding our collective breathe about the weather, because it was pretty chilly – downright cold – last week, BUT it is beautiful today and I predict we’re going to have typical tropical weather this winter.  Why?  It’s on my list for Santa and I’ve been very, very good this year.  So come and visit.  In fact, the annual Florida Holiday Migratory Pattern of those heading up North and families coming here for the holidays is in full swing.  Wherever you will be this time of year, I wish you peace, good cheer and great art.   Speaking of great art …

Now About the Gallery:
Our community’s commitment to conservation and wildlife preservation inspired me to create January’s exhibit, “Sacred Creatures.”   This exhibit features the work of seven artists who hold a reverence and respect for their subjects that together with their exceptional talent translates into wonderful works of art.  Sherry Rohl noted for her powerful equine paintings returns with her most recent work, as does Jill Brougher, who has added color to her sophisticated and sensual drawings of Sanibel shells, and master glass blower, Elodie Holmes from Santa Fe has created creatures from the sea for the exhibit.  New to the gallery is Gretchen Scharnagl from Florida International University with intimate detailed drawings of insects and Jean Noon who makes wire sculpture of the animals that share her Maine farm.  In addition, the birds that we so love will be honored both in the exquisite paintings of England’s Lynne Windsor and the elaborately stitched tapestry installation of South Carolina’s Fran Gardner. The work in this exhibit is a tribute to the creatures that make our world a more astonishing place.

The Opening Reception is Thursday, January 6th from 5:30 to 7:30pm.  Professors of Art, Fran Gardner and Gretchen Scharnagl will give the Artist Talk, which was very interesting and well received last month, on Friday January 7th from 11:00 to 12:00.  Please join us for the Opening of this very exciting exhibit and artist talk.  Best, Maureen

A Note about the Islands:
There is only one thing on people’s minds here this time of year – Holiday Decorating.  I just returned from four days in NYC where the stores are being decked out and per square-horizontal-mile Sanibel and Captiva Islands hold their own for wattage used.

My first year here I was amazed at the extent of the decorations and the amount of lights!  Periwinkle is like the Great White Way – Island Style.  I hadn’t seen so many lights since I’d drive to Brooklyn to see the Xmas Spectacular - houses decorated until they groaned under the weight.  The record number of lights on one house was – 500,000!  - it would stop traffic.  I kid you not.  Of course, WE are tastefully ablaze with white lights only, please.

And then there’s Luminary, when for one night, the stores are open late, adult-beverages flow…freely, food is abundant and there’s music (humm, sounds like one of my openings).  People will actually cross the Causeway to spend the night touring the shopping plazas on trolleys.  The Islands are so festive that it feels like Christmas even though it’s 80.  It’s a special time to be “On Island” so …

About the Gallery
… I thought it would be a special time to show a different kind of art then we usually see.  For those who crave unusual, fanciful and full-of-life art, December’s exhibit, “Folk, Fantasy & Outsider Art” (see attached Card) is not to be missed.  A varied combination of well-crafted, amazing work contributes to this exciting exhibition by seven artists from around the country - Amy Gross from the “Other Coast” offers biotope orbs – little worlds constructed of textiles and beads; Wendy Olson sent her cute, no edgy bunnies and Scarecrow Girls painted on ceramic cups from the woods of Wisconsin; another ceramicist, Jenny Lou Sherburne from North Carolina created whimsical, colorful organic tableware and obsessive drawings of children in bottles by Len Cowgill from Traverse City, Michigan are all new artists to the gallery.

Seattle’s Rick Araluce returns with new work - miniature rooms from the past completely fabricated by his hand; Laddy Sartin from the tradition of the Mississippi Delta folk artists “electrifies” his paintings of crows and creatures; and, Linda Green from Sanibel embellishes her whimsical women quilt-art creations with beads, hand-stitching and more French Knots than you’ve seen since Home Ec.  The art in this exhibit can captivate, amaze and move the viewer - like all good art.

This exhibition is fun and fabulous and a great stop for visiting company.  It will run from December 4th – 31st, 2010.  The Opening Reception is Tuesday, December 7th from 5:30 – 7:30.  ALSO, please join us on Wednesday, December 8th for the Artist Talk from 11 to 12.  As always, thank you for supporting the arts.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and looking forward to seeing you at the Gallery. Best, Maureen

Wed, 13 Oct 2010 10:50:51 -0700 Let the Sanibel Season Begin! http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/let-the-sanibel-season-begin http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/let-the-sanibel-season-begin

Let the Season Begin!

Season Opener – “In Black and White” Exhibit Reception

Thursday, October 21 from 5:00 to 7:00

A Note about the Islands:
I don’t know if there is an official opening day here on the Islands, but things are getting ready for everyone’s return – the foliage is trimmed, the shops are reopening and the weather is cooling down.  Sounds like season to me!  This summer there must have been a big sale on asphalt.  That’s right – that black, tar stuff.  It started in August when several shopping plazas blacktopped their parking lots.  Then the City got wind of the sale and repaved parts of the bike path putting solid yellow lines down the center of the “dangerous curves.” (really)  Next they covered San-Cap Road from Gulf Pines west to Pine Avenue by The Lazy Flamingo.  (One wonders why they didn’t go the extra 200 yards to Blind Pass, but hey, I’m sure there’s some municipality-type of reason.)  Now, they are even putting down sod along the newly tarred road.  Is sod on the invasive species list?
What else is new?  I’ve heard (and it has NOT been confirmed) that the folks from Twilight’s are going back to their roots and opening another Café in the former Sweet Treats and a gentleman from Captiva is opening a rare book store in Macintosh’s (who have moved to the Greenhouse plaza) former home.  The other “happenings” you can discover when you are back “On Island.”

And Now About the Gallery:
While the Gallery closed for September, I went art hunting/buying to North and South Carolina, New York, Santa Fe and the “Other Coast,” looking for wonderful work to show this Season.  Lucky Me!  I’ve brought back some interesting and fabulous work from two wonderful glassblowers (one who creates extraordinary shells), pottery both colorfully glazed and quietly smoke-fired and of course, fabulous paintings and drawings.  I’ll be sending out a schedule of the exhibits in the next note.  And for October …

New Exhibit: “In Black and White”
We’ll kick off the Season on Thursday, October 21st from 5:00 to 7:00pm with a get together so we can visit with who’s back and enjoy this exhibit of sophisticated paintings, drawings and sculpture by some of our favorite artists.  Join us for a ‘nosh’ and a libation or stop by the gallery when you do return.  This exhibit will run through November 7, 2010.

Hope to see you soon.  Maureen

Thu, 10 Jun 2010 13:27:13 -0700 What's Happening on Sanibel for the Gulf http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/whats-happening-on-sanibel-for-the-gulf http://watsonmacraegallery.posterous.com/whats-happening-on-sanibel-for-the-gulf

For the Gulf

I always include a little something about what’s happening around our Islands in my monthly exhibition announcements.  While little is going on, there is a lot on our minds – the horror in the Gulf of Mexico.  I’m sure you’re concerned about it as well.  I can’t imagine any people that love the water, beach, vegetation and creatures more than those who live and visit Sanibel and Captiva.

Our beaches are clean and the water clear.  Even so, true to the Sanibel/Captiva spirit there are pro-active efforts at many levels - the Chamber of Commerce, CROW, SCFF and others are at work.  We are also doing one other thing  - this Friday, June 11th at 6 pm we are gathering on Algers Beach to hold a Vigil for the Gulf of Mexico and Our Islands.

I believe in the power of prayer, intention and positive thought, especially the power of a group.  Therefore, I invite you, from where every you are in the world, to join us in our spiritual efforts for the Gulf.  No matter your spiritual persuasion, please connect with us – chant, pray, send positive thoughts, visualize, dance, meditate, walk the labyrinth, sing, hoot, holler or hold silence for our beautiful Gulf, all Its creatures, life forms and our Islands.

As we say in New York – “It vouldn’t hoit!”  I think it will help.

Until 6, Love, Maureen
